AB OBJECTIVE: To look for a possible correlation between
lymphoproliferative response to phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) and
recombinant interleukin (rIL-2) and the known markers of HIV-infection.
METHODS: Ten HIV-infected persons (7 with AIDS and 3 asymptomatic) were
followed-up in 3-6 month intervals. Lymphoproliferative response to PHA,
rIL-2 and PHA+rIL-2, as well as the spontaneous blastogenesis, were
measured in radiometric blasttransformation assay along with CD4/CD8,
p24 Ag, anti-p24, plasma viremia and Western blot (WB) patterns.
RESULTS: Although preliminary, our results show a correlation between
the spontaneous blastogenesis and p24 Ag detection with progression of
HIV infection. The value of the ratio between stimulation indices of
PHA+rIl-2/PHA correlates to CD4, plasma viremia, WB and course of
infection. CONCLUSION: The proposed by us ratio might be a valuable
marker in the monitoring and prognosis of HIV-infection.
